December 2010

Ms. Davis,

I met you after a lecture in one of Jack Spengler's environmental management classes on my way to a Harvard degree in the same field (May 2010). You signed my copy of When Smoke Ran Like Water. I have followed your work ever since that night. I find it amazing that environmental public policy and those who formulate it seem to ignore the facts whether it relates to climate change, cell phones, or the many other environmental problems humanity has created. I was an older student, almost 60 now, and chided a number of my Harvard professors to be more vocal in the public realm. It takes great strength and resolve to do that and I heartily applaud your efforts.

On a personal note I want to relay a short story about myself. For years I had a series of problems that involved my ear, teeth, and sinusitis. I live on Martha's Vineyard where cell phones do not work well but I did, past tense, have portable phones. I noticed a correlation between my off-island use of my cell phone and a resurgence of the difficulties on the right side of my face (Yes, my phone side.). My first action was to rid my home of wireless phones. I experienced a reduction of my symptoms within weeks. I now only use my cell phone when absolutely necessary and then with an ear piece, speaker, or at the one inch distance.

After 10 years of chasing my symptoms with a number of doctors in the many disciplines involved in the facial or dental field I finally have no issues. In fact, for those few times I am forced use wireless phones I readily notice a slightly swollen feeling and a sense that my eustachian tube is clogged.

Your books are gifts for those who are willing to listen. I fear for my children and the many people who choose to ignore the science and the message you convey so well.

Please keep your voice loudly in the public forum. It is vital.

With deep admiration and appreciation,

David
